SALEM, Mass. -- Senior outside hitter Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, N.H./Mascenic Regional) swung for a season-high 16 kills to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Suffolk University Rams in one of their three matches at the Salem State Invitational Saturday at Twohig Gymnasium.
In its opening match, Southern Maine fell to Mt. St. Mary's (NY) 3-0 (12-25, 6-25, 11-25) before rebounding to defeat Suffolk 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-15). In its last match of the day, USM lost to host Salem State 3-1 (25-15, 15-25, 20-25, 16-25). The Huskies are now 3-13 overall. Mt. St. Mary's stands at 9-7 and Salem State is 4-13.
Shuttle benefitted from an excellent match from junior setter Hallie Noah (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage). Noah passed out a match-high 31 assists for the Huskies.
Southern Maine senior outside hitter Danielle Netland (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) was named to the all-tournament team. Netland played steady throughout the three matches, finishing the tournament with 17 kills, 16 digs, two service aces and four solo blocks.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match.
