GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie Zach Danssaert (Solana Beach, Calif./Canyon Crest) score three goals as the nationally-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears rolled past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 7-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win extends the Polar Bears winning streak to seven, and improved their overall record to 8-1-2. The Huskies dropped to 4-9-2 overall.
Danssaert picked up plenty of support from junior Eddie Jones (Scarborough, Maine/Loomis Chaffee) who had a goal and two assists, and senior Tim Prior (Georgetown, Mass./St. John's Prep) and sophomore Michael Gale (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) who each tallied a goal and an assist. First-year Evan Gerskovich (Princeton, N.J.) had the other Polar Bear goal.
Danssaert put the Polar Bears ahead to stay in the sixth minute when he ran onto a well-place pass from Jones and beat USM senior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) with a low shot under Kreps. Six minutes later, Danssaert redirected a flick from the right end line by senior Ben Denton-Schneider (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Academy) past Kreps for a 2-0 lead. The freshman forward scored his third goal of the match in the 68th minute finishing a nice passing sequence from Jones and junior Nick Powell (Enfield, N.H./Kimball Union). The three goals give Danssaert four markers on the season.
Rookie goalkeeper Will Wise (Cohasset, Mass) played into the 79th minute for Bowdoin and registered two saves. Junior Peter Kelley (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) did not need to make a save over the final 12 minutes. Kreps recorded seven saves before giving way to sophomore Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) in the 72nd minute. Turner had one save.
Southern Maine returns to the pitch on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it hosts Rhode Island College for a Little East Conference match. Bowdoin hosts Trinity College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC match.
