GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Samantha Merriweather (Los Altos, Calif.) scored the only goal and sophomore goalkeeper Jayde Bennett (Lynn, Mass.) registered five saves as Colby College defeated the University of Southern Maine, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match at the USM Soccer Field Wednesday afternoon.
The win puts the Mules a game over .500 at 4-3-3 overall. The Huskies dropped their third straight match to slip to 4-10-0 overall.
Merriweather tallied the only goal in the 25th minute of play when she converted a pass from rookie Annie Papadellis (Hopkinton, Mass.) into her first goal of the season. Pappadellis made a strong run down the left wing side to the end line before centering a pass out to Merriweather 12 yards from goal.
Bennett played a steady game in goal for the Mules to record her fifth shutout of the season. Southern Maine employed two goalies as junior Kat Rothe (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area) and sophomore Katie Cobb (Lewiston, Maine) each played a half. Both were credited with two saves.
Colby piled up a 17-7 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks during the match.
Southern Maine travels this weekend to play Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). Colby will also be on the road traveling to Amherst College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC match.
