FARMINGTON, Maine -- Junior Sean Raph (Waterville, Maine) scored four minutes into the second half to erase a 1-0 deficit as the University of Maine Farmington Beavers and the University of Southern Maine Huskies played to a 1-1 overtime draw in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon at Prescott Field.
The draw leaves Southern Maine with a 3-8-2 overall mark. UMaine Farmington is 5-4-3 on the season.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when junior Jeff Soules (Scarborough, Maine) curled a shot past UMF rookie goalkeeper Derek Reilly (Hollis-Brookline, N.H.) for his first goal of the season. USM senior goalie David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) protected the lead through halftime. Kreps made six of his 12 saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Raph netted his third goal of the season shortly after play resumed in the second half, converting a feed from sophomore Michael Kelly (Norton, Mass.). From that point, Kreps and UMF freshman keeper Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, Maine), who came on to play at the start of the second half, kept the sides' offenses at bay for the remainder of regulation time and the two 10-minute, sudden-death overtime periods.
Peters was credited with seven saves over the final 65 minutes. Reilly had one stop in the opening half. UMF held a slim, 21-20 edge in shots while USM had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern Maine returns home on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) to host Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference match. UMF is scheduled to host Johnson State College on Saturday (3:15 pm.) in a North Atlantic Conference match.
