Bates Rolls Past Southern Maine 3-0

            LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Sydney Phillips (Plainville, Mass./King Philip Regional) led an impressive Bates College frontline attack Thursday night as the Bobcats cruised past the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-13), in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Alumni Gymnasium.

            The win improves the Bobcats overall record to 15-7.  The Huskies dipped to 13-14 on the season.

            The Bobcats posted their second-best attack percentage of the season knocking down 46 kills against just eight errors on 105 attacks (.362 attack percentage).  Phillips led the Bates attack with 10 kills against no errors on 17 attacks for a .588 attack percentage.  Junior Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany) and senior Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif./Notre Dame) added eight kills apiece.

            Senior Julie Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) and rookie Emma Eide (Ramsey, N.J.) each had 18 assists for Bates.  Taylor-Smith had a team high 14 digs.

            Senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) led the Huskies with seven kills.  Sophomore Molly Mawhinney (South Portland, Maine) led all players with 17 digs, and classmate Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) had 12 assists.

            Southern Maine will host a Senior Day tri-match on Saturday (12 p.m.) facing Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference match and Colby College in a non-conference match (4 p.m.).  The Huskies will honor their two seniors, Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Gettings, prior to the Colby match.  Bates will host its Senior Day activities on Saturday (2 p.m.) prior to a NESCAC match with Trinity College.
