Southern Maine Rallies to Defeat Lasell 3-1

NEWTON, Mass. -- Rookie outside hitter Joie Hared (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) earned her first collegiate double-double Tuesday night pounding down 14 kills and posting 12 digs as the visiting University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Lasell University 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23) in a non-conference match at the Lasell Athletic Center.

With the win, the Huskies got back to the .500 level at 13-13 overall and snapped a three-match losing skid.  The Lasers dropped their third straight to fall to 7-18 overall.  The two squads will meet again on November 2 as part of a tri-match at Keene State College.

Lasell ran off five straight points in the middle of the first set to turn a 14-12 deficit into a 17-14 lead. The Lasers never relinquished the lead and held on for a 25-20 victory.  The Huskies jumped out to an 8-1 lead to start the second set, and extended their margin to 20-11.  Lasell roared back with eight straight points on the serving of sophomore Kiana Perez Diaz (Juncos, P.R.) to cut the margin to one at 20-19, but USM held on for a 25-23 decision to even up the match.

In the pivotal third set, Southern Maine took an early lead and maintained a 4-5 point lead throughout before closing out a 25-15 verdict.  Lasell led the majority of the fourth set, but the Huskies rallied from a 19-16 deficit winning nine of the final 13 points to clinch the set, and the match.

Sophomore setter Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) posted her third straight double-double, and 10th of the season, for the Huskies passing out 23 assists and earning 18 digs.  Senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) was a kill shy of a double-double knocking down nine kills, including four late in the final set, and digging up a season-high 15 balls.  Sophomore Molly Mawhinney (South Portland, Maine) contributed seven kills, six digs and three total blocks.  Junior libero Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) had 14 digs on the back line.

Perez Diaz led all hitters with 16 kills for the hosts, and senior Amanda DiLeonardo (West Haven, Conn.) contributed a double-double with 10 kills and 16 digs.  Sophomores Meg Roberts (Newington, Conn.) and Corina Lombardi (York, Maine) added six winners each for Lasell, and freshman Karissa Gaughan (Granby, Conn.) matched DiLeonardo with a team-high 16 digs. Sophomore setter Jess Langan (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) finished with 31 assists.

Southern Maine hits the road again Thursday night (7 p.m.) to face Bates College in a non-conference match.  Lasell will be back in action tomorrow night (7:30 p.m.) hosting Anna Maria College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match.
