Huskies Host Plymouth State on Wednesday (7 p.m.)
CASTLETON, Vt. -- The University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team cruised to a pair of victories Saturday defeating Castleton University and Paul Smith's (N.Y.) College by identical 3-0 scores in tri-match at Castleton's Glenbrook Gymnasium.
The Huskies began the day's action by downing the host Spartans 25-5, 25-13, 25-5 in a Little East Conference match. The Huskies returned to the floor to defeat the Bobcats in a non-conference match 25-7, 25-11, 25-7. With the two wins, the Huskies improved to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the Little East Conference.
In the opening match, sophomore Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) led the way with eight kills, 16 assists and six digs. Senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) and sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) contributed seven kills apiece, and senior Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) chipped in with six kills. The Huskies combined for a .433 attacking percentage (36-7-67) in the match.
Freshman Lizzie Goodrich (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex), sophomore Madison Hamelink (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and junior Shannon Manchester (West Hartford, Conn./William F. Hall) had three kills apiece for the Spartans. Junior setter Bre McDuff (Hudson Falls, N.Y.) had nine assists and five digs. Rookie Layne Cronin (Prospect, Conn/Woodland Regional) and junior Meghan Zawatsky (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in with five digs.
Against Paul Smith's College, Austin led the Huskies' offense with a career-high 11 kills. Rookie Joie Hared (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) added 10 kills and four service aces. Lindsay had 27 assists to go along with six kills. Foerster contributed five kills, five aces and five digs. Junior Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) added six kills. Gettings led all players with 13 digs.
The Huskies had another strong match up front attacking at a .444 clip (41-9-72) and serving up a season-high16 aces.
Junior Meaghan Hardeman (Red Hook, N.Y.) and senior Paige Farrington (Lake George, N.Y.) had two kills for the Bobcats. Farrington also had two assists. Junior libero Nayleece Williams (Palinville, N.Y./Catskill) contributed seven digs.
Southern Maine returns home next Wednesday night (7 p.m.) to host Plymouth State University for a Little East Conference match.
