Southern Maine Falls to WPI and Maine Maritime
GORHAM, Maine -- Playing their home opening matches of the 2019 season, the University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team lost to visiting WPI, 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-13, 25-10), and Maine Maritime Academy, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex.
The Huskies slip back to the .500 mark with the two losses at 3-3 on the season. Maine Maritime also defeated WPI 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20) to sweep its two matches and improved to 4-1 overall with its fourth straight win. WPI finished the day at 3-2 overall.
In the opening match of the day, WPI compiled an impressive .336 hitting percentage, including a .393 percentage over the final two sets to pull away. Senior Colleen Mullins (Andover, Mass.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Senior Abbie Gilbert (Hopkinton, Mass.) contributed 10 kills and eight digs. Junior Sarah Kwatinetz (Seattle, Wash.) added nine kills and junior Amanda Wetmore (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) chipped in eight kills. Freshman Catherine Reynolds (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) orchestrated the Engineer offense passing out 36 assists, and earned a double-double by adding 13 digs.
Sophomore Kacey Foerster (Scarborough, Maine) earned her third double-double of the season for USM with a match-high 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) also had a double-double with 28 assists and 10 digs. Junior libero Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) shared match-high honors for digs with WPI junior libero Kayleigh Campbell (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) as each had 17.
In the middle match, Maine Maritime was led sophomore Rachel Melampy (Marshfield, Mass./Duxbury), who pounded down 22 kills and had 12 digs, to defeat WPI in four sets. MMA junior Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) also had a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Reynolds posted a double-double for WPI with 32 assists and 12 kills.
Melampy and D'Auria led the Mariners to a sweep of the Huskies in the day's final match. Melampy had 17 kills and 12 digs, and D'Auria contributed 14 kills. Senior setter Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) dished out 42 assists, and had eight digs and four block assists.
Foerster came up a dig shy of another double-double with 10 kills and nine digs. Lindsay had 21 assists and was one of three players with five kills.
Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7 p.m.) for a non-conference match. Maine Maritime travels to Merchant Marine next weekend for the 10th Annual Maritime Classic. WPI hosts Elms College in non-conference action on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
