USM Knocks Off Maine Maritime 3-1
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Paced by sophomore Kacey Foerster's (Scarborough, Maine) 15 kills and three service aces, the University of Southern Maine women's volleyball opened the 2019 season with a 3-1 non-conference victory (25-21, 12-25, 25-22, 25-21) over Maine Maritime Academy Friday evening at the University of New England. The match was the season opener for both squads.
In the pivotal third set, the Huskies found themselves down 15-10 before going on a 9-1 run, aided by some poor MMA attacks, to take a 19-16 lead. The lead had grown to 24-19 when the Mariners got two kills from senior Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) to spark a 3-0 surge to close within two points (24-22). USM would take the set on a kill from sophomore Sophia Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) to go up 2-1.
Southern Maine moved out to a 14-8 lead in the decisive fourth set. MMA rallied to tie the set 21-21 with a 13-7 run, but the Huskies took the final four points to close the match on junior Rachel Chillé's (Yarmouth, Maine) only kill of the night.
Complementing Foerster along the front line were senior Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) with six kills, Lindsay with five kills and 22 assists, and four kills from junior Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine). Junior Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) led the back line with 17 digs, and Foerster had 10 digs to earn a double-double. Sophomore Molly Mawhinney (South Portland) chipped in with three kills, two digs and five blocks (one solo, four assists).
Junior Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 11 kills and eight digs. Adams added nine kills, dished off 30 assists and had seven digs. Senior Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif) missed a double-double by one kill knocking down nine kills to go along with a team-high 14 digs.
