Kalilwa, Ferrara Post Wins in Triple Jump and Pole Vault
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Led by a pair of top two finishes from junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) in the horizontal jumps and a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault, the University of Southern Maine women's track and field team came home in fourth place at the annual Little East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Saturday at Fitchburg State University.
Competing in an eighth-team field, the Huskies amassed 83 points to finish in the top half of the field. Rhode Island College took the team title with 180 points, followed by Keene State College with 141 and Eastern Connecticut State University with 112.50.
Kalilwa won her first LEC outdoor triple jump title with a mark of 11.28 meters (37-0¼), and was runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 5.50 meters (18-0½).
Junior Katie Ferrara (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) led the Huskies' 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault. Competing in difficult conditions, Ferrara took the title by clearing 2.95 meters (9-8). Senior Penny Maimone (Stoneham, Mass./Arlington Catholic) was runner-up clearing 2.80 meters (9-2¼), and freshman Bekah Robertson (Biddeford, Maine) tied for third at 2.65 meters (8-8¼).
On the track, junior Samantha Dow (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) earned a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Running into a strong head wind, Dow posted a time of 16.88 seconds in the finals. Sophomore Sydney Sirois (Greene, Maine/St. Dominic Academy) scored in two events taking a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters with her time of 19:17.18, and a sixth-place result in the 1500 with a time of 5:17.73.
Senior Haley Bantz (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) and junior Jess Regan (Sturbridge, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) also scored in two running events. Bantz was fourth in the 1500 at 5:12.18, and fifth in the 800 at 2:30.71. Regan earned a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.27, and a sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.14.
In the field events, the Huskies received scoring efforts from junior Ashley Joyner (Auburn, Maine/Granbury (Texas)), freshman Catherine Close (Orleans, Vt./Lake Region Union) and sophomore Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.). Joyner finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.48 meters (34-4¾) while Close placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 31.35 meters (102-10). Comeau took sixth place in the hammer throw with a season-best mark of 36.79 meters (120-8).
Qualified competitors will head to Williams College next Friday and Saturday to compete at the New England Division III Championships.
