Late Goal Upends Southern Maine at Keene State 3-2


KEENE, N.H.  –  Jordyn Abasciano scored her second goal of the game in the 88th minute to lift the Keene State College Owls to a 3-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Conference. 

With the win, Keene State improves to 10-8-0 and 5-3 in the LEC.  The Owls will await their upcoming pairings for the 2019 LEC tournament. Southern Maine concludes its season at 8-10-1 and 2-6 in the conference. 


            Trailing 1-0 after Abasciano's first goal of the game in the eighth minute, Southern Maine rallied to take a 2-1 lead behind a brace from junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine).  Berthiaume scored her first goal of the game in the 13th minute, drilling a shot off the right side post and into the next after a through ball from junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine). Berthiaume made it 2-1 in favor of the Huskies in the 33rd minute with a strike from distance for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

            The Huskies' held their lead until the 65th minute before KSC's Patricia Norton made a strong individual effort carrying the ball through the USM defense for an equalizing goal off of her left foot.  With regulation time winding down and the game seemingly headed to overtime, Abasciano completed an assist from Sarah Carron for the victory.  


Keene State goalkeeper Abbie Terrinca made six saves in the win. Southern Maine freshman goalkeeper Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) made six saves in the loss.  . 


            Berthiaume ends her second season with the Huskies with a total of 24 goals and 11 assist for 59 points. In just 37 career games, her 24 goals are fourth all-time in USM career records, while her 11 assists are fifth.  With 59 points, Berthiaume is tied for second with three other players: Liz Brunton, Debbie Jandreau and Cora Seaman.
