GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Peter Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), Jared Garcia (Marshfield, Mass.), Josh Smith (York, Maine) and Zach Thompson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) have been named captains of the 2019-2020 University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team.
Each of the Huskies' four senior captains will lead a talented and deep squad throughout the season, and are expected to play a vital role in the team's success. Led by former USM All-American and fifth-year head coach Mike Morin '10, Southern Maine is coming off of a 2-0 start with decisive dual meet victories over Plymouth State University and Rhode Island College, the Huskies will host their first home contests of the season on Saturday (12:30 pm). USM will take on Johnson & Wales University and Bridgewater State at Hill Gym. JWU and BSU will face each other at 11 a.m. prior to challenging the Huskies.
Both Garcia and Smith earned New England Wrestling Association All-Academic team honors for the Huskies in 2018-2019. A William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete studying for a degree in Exercise Science, Garcia competes at 149 and 157 pounds for the Huskies. Garcia finished his junior year at 16-8. Also a William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete, Smith is studying Environmental Science. Wrestling at 184 pounds, Smith had five wins by fall and finished the season at 17-18.
Thompson earned NEWA honorable mention honors after a successful 2018-19 season competing at 157 pounds. A William B. Wise Scholar Athlete majoring in Criminology, Thompson has 30 wins to his credit wrestling at 174, 165 and 157 during his career. Last season, Thompson won four of his final six matches of the season and went 2-2 at the regional championship.
A 2019 NCAA Division III All-American after earning a third place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championship, Del Gallo recently picked up his 100th career victory during the Huskies' opening weekend. A first team All-NEWA selection, Del Gallo is presently sixth in the all-time wins list with 101.
