USM Receives IWLCA Academic Honor Squad Honor

            GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight year, the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team has received the IWLCA (Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association) Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad designation for the recently completed 2018-19 academic year.  Southern Maine was among the 312 schools across NCAA Divisions I, II and III, and NAIA to earn the designation.  The complete list was released by the IWLCA office on Wednesday.

            To earn the Honor Squad designation, a team must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the academic year.  Southern Maine's 25-member squad, under of the direction of second-year head coach Ashley Durepo, finished the 2018-19 year with a combined GPA of 3.117 during the year.

            Among the players were seniors Colleen Fleming (South Portland, Maine), Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine), Mira Kuni (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic), Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) and Miriam Wood (Wakefield, Mass.).

            Also, juniors Taylor Colangelo (Windham, Maine), Libby Davis (Freeport, Maine/Mt. Ararat), Katie Howe (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown), Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic), Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Megan Violette (Portland, Maine/Deering).

            The sophomores included Morgan Eliasen (Lewiston, Maine), Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle), Hannah Gorham (Lyman, Maine/Thornton Academy), Val Kocsis (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth), Elise LaSlavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside), Kassie Thibodeau (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and Mariah Vaillancourt (Lewiston, Maine/Edward Little).

            Rounding out the squad were freshmen Lakin Conner (Winthrop, Maine), Evelyn Hinkley (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area), Lindsey Keenan (Naples, Maine/Lake Region), Taylor Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine), Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region), Gabrielle Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) and Payton Winslow (Auburn, Maine/St. Dominic).

            The Huskies compiled a 10-6 overall record and advanced to the Little East Conference championship game.  Five players - Jordan, Kuni, Keenan, Fleming and Van Nostrand - were named to the LEC all-conference team, and Durepo was voted by her peers as the Coach of the Year.
