Endicott Stops Southern Maine 3-1

BEVERLY, Mass. -- Junior Ashlie Jones (Billerica, Mass.) had a goal and an assist as the Endicott College Gulls opened their 2019-20 season with a 3-1 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's ice hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

The loss was the second in two days for the Huskies who opened their season Friday losing to the University of New England.

The Gulls took advantage of their second power play in the opening period to take a 1-0 lead.  Senior Jillian Gibbs (Burlington, Vt.) converted from Jones and senior Jade Meier (Fairbanks, Alaska) at 10:41.  Sixty-three seconds later, rookie Kaylee Liberty (Arlington Heights., Ill.) made it 2-0 off an assist from sophomore Courtney Sullivan (North Yarmouth, Maine).

Endicott fired 19 shots on USM senior goalie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) who turned aside 17 to keep the Huskies within striking distance.

Jones increased the lead to 3-0 early in the second period with an unassisted goal.

Southern Maine got on the board for the first time this season at the 8:06 mark of the second when senior Jill Hannigan (Portland, Maine) found the net after assists from junior Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) and senior Mikayla Butkus (Essex Jct., Vt.).  With nearly 32 minutes remaining in the game, that would be the last goal.

Padgett finished with 26 saves over the 33:57 of play.  Sophomore Alexa Henriksen (Marshfield,. Mass.) came on to make 13 saves over the final 26:03.  Endicott senior Alyssa Peterson (Cranberry Township, Pa.) stopped 19 shots, including 13 in the third period, to earn the win.

The Gulls outshot the Huskies 42-20 in the game, and converted on 1 of 3 power plays.  The Huskies were 0 for 4 with the extra skater.

Southern Maine opens New England Hockey Conference play next weekend hosting New England College on Friday (7 p.m.) and Plymouth State University on Saturday (4 p.m.).  Endicott will begin Colonial Hockley Conference next Friday and Saturday with a home-and-home series against Nichols College.
