Southern Maine’s Victoria Harris Named to MWBCA All-Rookie Team

GORHAM, Maine   – Freshman forward Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's basketball team has been named to the 2019 Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) following a vote of member coaches.

Harris had an outstanding rookie campaign for the Huskies, making an immediate impact offensively and defensively as a member of the Southern Maine frontcourt.  Playing in all 27 of the Huskies' contests, Harris averaged 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.0 blocked shots per game while shooting a team-best 51.7 percent (89-for-172) from the field.  The Huskies third-leading scorer, Harris led USM in blocked shots (26) and was seventh in the Little East Conference.  The Huskies' 5-11 center scored in double-figures in 10 games, including a season and career-best 18 points against Colby (January 29).  Harris had career-highs of nine rebounds (University of New England, November 14), three steals, twice (Castleton, February 19); and four blocked shots (UMass Dartmouth, November 28).

"Victoria had a tremendous impact in her rookie season and has quickly acclimated to intercollegiate play," said fourth-year head coach Samantha Allen.  "She is a very coachable athlete, and has a high-ceiling for her basketball career; Victoria has quick hands, fast reflexes and is a tough match-up for opponents offensively and defensively."

Twice named the MWBCA Rookie of the Week (November 13, December 8), Harris earned MWBCA Rookie Honor Roll recognition eight times during the 2018-2019 season.  Harris also earned Little East Conference Rookie of the Week (February 4) and New England Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week (November 13) honors once during the season.

Harris and the Huskies finished the 2018-2019 season with a record of 16-11 overall, and an 11-5 mark in Little East Conference play.  Southern Maine finished third in the Little East Conference, and advanced to the tournament's semifinal for its best finish since the 2014 season.
