PROVIDENCE, RI   – Junior Kimberly Howrigan and senior Miranda Nicely (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) combined for 32 points and 16 rebounds to propel the University o Southern Maine Huskies to a 56-49 win over Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at The Murray Center. 

            The win lifts 14 the Huskies record to 13-10 overall and 9-3 in the Little East Conference.  Rhode Island College is 7-14 overall, and 1-10 in the Little East.

            Howrigan was 5-12 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while Nicely was 6-for-12 to tie for team-high scoring honors.  Howrigan snagged nine rebounds, and Nicely had seven boards, two assists and two steals.  Freshman Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine), senior Emily Nicholson (Quispamsis, New Brunswick/Kennebecasis) and sophomore Chantel Eells each had six points. Curley added five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot, while Nicholson dished out four assists and had four rebounds.

             RIC's Olivia Livramento posted game-highs with 20 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 10-for-19 from the field before fouling out late in the contest.  Four players scored six points for RIC: Brooke Young, Jessa Rubera, Amber DeCristofaro, and Maragaret McCaffrey.  DeCristofaro had nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.

            Despite leading the Anchorwomen by 14 points, 36-22, midway through the third quarter, the Huskies found themselves in a close game late as they went ice-cold from the field in the fourth.   quarter.  Howrigan's two free throws with 4:12 to play in the third game USM its largest lead of the game, 36-22, but RIC used an 8-4 mini-run to make it a 10-point game, 40-30, to start the fourth.  Livramento scored six of RIC's points in the run, which was completed by a layup from DeCristofaro.

            Eells scored the first basket of the fourth to put USM up 42-30, but a 9-3 RIC run made it a two possession game, 45-39, with 7:47 to play in the game.  Young keyed the run with a three, which was followed by layups from DeCristofaro and Livramento.  After the Livramento basket, scoring took a break, until the Huskies used a bucket from freshman Morgan Eliasen (Lewiston, Maine) for a 47-39 lead with 5:41 to play.

             After the Eliasen bucket, USM went 1-for-5 from the floor with two turnovers over the next 4:40 of action while RIC completed a 7-0 run to pull to within four, 49-45, capped by a three from McCaffrey.  Down by two baskets with 1:02 to play, RIC put USM on the line.  Howrigan sank two to extend her team's lead to 51-45.  From there, USM went 5-for-6 from the line down the stretch to complete the win. 

Southern Maine hosts UMass Boston (5:30 pm) in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader.  It is the Huskies' final regular season home game of the season before the LEC tournament.
