Beginning his sixth season as the head coach of the USM men's track & field program, Ryan Harkleroad assumed the reigns of the program in 2014-15 season after serving as an assistant coach for two seasons.
Last year, Harkleroad led the Huskies to a sweep of the Little East Conference cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field championships for the third straight year, and fourth time in conference history matching the achievement of the 2009-10, 2016-17 and 2017-18 USM teams. Harkleroad was named the cross country Coach of the Year for the third straight year, and he and his staff were selected by their peers as the indoor and outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year. In the past five seasons under Harkleroad's direction, the Huskies have swept the LEC indoor and outdoor track and field championships.
In his first season, Harkleroad led the Huskies to their second consecutive runner-up finish at the Little East Conference Cross Country Championships and conference titles during the indoor and outdoor season earning LEC Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year Honors. The Huskies had a program best fourth-place finish at the NEICAAA Open New England Indoor Championships, and a program best sixth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The Huskies set school records in five events, qualified six athletes in five events (triple jump, long jump, 4x400m, 400m, 800m) for the NCAA Championships, and earned six All-American honors (National Champion in triple jump, runner-up in long jump, and seventh place in 4x400m relay).
The 2015 Outdoor season saw five additional school records (100m, 4x100m, 4x800m, long jump, triple jump) and three LEC Conference records (4x100m, 4x800m, triple jump). Five athletes in three events (long jump, triple jump, 4x400m) qualified for the 2015 NCAA Outdoor National Championships bringing home two more All-American Honors (national champion in long jump, runner-up in triple jump) and Jamie Ruginski was named the USTFCCCA National Field Athlete of the Year.
Prior to coming to USM, Harkleroad served as an Academic Support Counselor and Assistant Cross Country and Track Coach for two years at the University of Maine. On the track, Coach Harkleroad worked primarily with the UMaine male and female distance runners. During the 2009-10 season, the UMaine women’s team earned conference runner-up honors during the cross country and outdoor track season which earned the UMaine Staff Outdoor Track & Field Coaching Staff of the Year Honors.
Harkleroad earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maine in 2003, and his master's in adult and higher education from USM in 2014. While a student at UMaine, he earned four varsity letters as a member of the track & field teams, won a conference 800-meter title, numerous conference and New England titles as a member of the 4x800m team, and served as the team captain his senior year.
