BOSTON – The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team made a strong showing Saturday competing at the Terrier Classic held at Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University. The meet is a non team-scoring event that features competitors from NCAA Division One, Two and Three institutions.
The Huskies received numerous New England Division III, ECAC Division III and NEIcAAA New England Championship qualifying times during the course of the day.
Four Huskies met the N.E. Division III standard in the 200 meters paced by junior Sheldon Allen (Boston, Mass./Charlestown) who flashed across the finish line in 22.87 seconds. Freshman Dan Webb (Acton, Maine/Sanford) and sophomore Jamie Ruginski (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each posted times of 22.94, and freshman Zach Miller (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) met the standard with his time of 23.22.
Webb led four USM runners who met the N.E. Division III standard in the 400 meters with his time of 49.86 seconds. Freshman Jeremy Collins (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) posted a time of 50.23, senior Parker Chipman (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) crossed the line in 50.87 and senior Codey Rich (Wells, Maine) met the standard with his time of 51.47. Webb, Collins and Chipman also met the ECAC qualifying standard, and Webb and Collins surpassed the NEIcAAA standard.
Sophomore Kevin Desmond (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) covered the 800 meters in 1:57.22 to make the N.E. Division III meet, and junior Julian Gazzelloni (Windham, Maine) posted a N.E. Division III and ECAC qualifying time of 4:17.64 in the mile.
Allen also posted an N.E. Division III, ECAC and NEIcAAA qualifying time in the 60-meter high hurdles with the 10th fastest time of the trials, 8.31 seconds.
The Huskies 4 x 400 relay quartet of Collins, Webb, Allen and Chipman posted a time of 3:22.66 to meet the ECAC and NEIcAAA qualifying standard.
Southern Maine hosts the annual State of Maine Championships on Saturday (6:00 p.m.) at the Costello Sports Complex.
