Caron Brace Leads Maine Maritime Over Southern Maine 3-1


GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) scored a pair of second half goals to highlight a 3-1 win for the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday night at Hannaford Field. 

With the win, Maine Maritime improves to 10-3-1 overall.  The Huskies dip to 0-13-3 on the season. USM leads the overall series 10-4-2. 


            Although not credited with an official stat, Caron played a part in the Mariners' first goal of the game launching a throw in into the box, which found the back of the net as a USM own goal in the fifth minute. Up 1-0 early in the contest, MMA kept its lead through the first 45.  

            The Mariners scored early in the second half to double their lead in the 50th minute when Caron finished a pass into the box from freshman Pieter Oudejans (Rockledge, Fla./Merritt Island) for his ninth goal of the season.  Caron added to his team-high goal tally, scoring his 10th goal of 2019 in the 58th minute. After receiving the ball, Caron made two touches to the outside to open space and then scored to the far post for a 3-0 lead. 

            USM freshman Noah Perry (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) broke up the shutout with his second goal of the season in the 70th. Perry benefited from a slick back heel into the box from sophomore Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine) for the 3-1 final. The assist is Shaib's second of the season. 


Senior Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) earned the win for MMA making five saves and allowing one goal in 75:31 of action.  Sophomore Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine/Mt. View) played the final 14:29 and did not make a save.  USM sophomore Cameron Atherton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) absorbed the loss making three saves and allowing three goals in 61:32.  Senior Dalton Cassidy (Fort Fairfield, Maine) played the final 28:28 making a save. 


            Southern Maine hosts travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday (1:00 pm) for a Little East Conference game.
