NORTHFIELD, Vermont – Freshman Zack Allocca (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) scored in his intercollegiate debut but the University of Southern Maine Huskies fell 2-1 in overtime at Norwich University in the first day of the Cadet Kickoff Classic in a non-conference men's soccer game Friday night at Sabine Field.
Playing in their season-opening games, the Cadets earned the win with a goal in the 97th minute to claim a 1-0 start to their season. Southern Maine starts at 0-1.
Allocca put the Huskies on the scoreboard in the 36th minute converting an assist from sophomore Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine). The Huskies remained in front of Norwich until late in the second half. USM sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Atherton (New Milford, Conn.) played well in his Husky debut making seven saves.
Norwich drew even in the 73rd minute on a goal from Andrew Kalombo to set up the extra time. The Huskies' put one on frame in the 76th minute with an on-target attempt from senior Sam Anderson (Middletown, Conn.), but Norwich goalkeeper Robert Wagenseller made the stop. Wagenseller finished the game with three saves.
Norwich grabbed the game-winner in the 97th after earning a corner kick. Julio Arreola gave the Cadets the win knocking in the service from Alex Brannon. Brannon also assisted on Kalombo's goal.
Southern Maine remains in Vermont and will face Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday (4:00 pm) in its second game of the Cadet Invitational.
