BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Brett Mecrones (Medford, Mass.) and senior Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich.) scored two goals apiece as the 11th-ranked University of New England Nor'easters overcame an early one-goal deficit by scoring seven consecutive goals to defeat the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 7-2, in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The loss snapped the Huskies' three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) as they fall to 2-6-1 on the season.  The Nor'easters won their third straight game to improve to 7-2-0 overall.

Southern Maine got goals from junior Maverick Lynes (Sherwood Park, Alberta) and sophomore Adam Withers (Kenora, Ontario).  Lynes gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 9:03 of the first period when he fired a rebound past UNE senior goaltender Tate Sproxton (Surrey, B.C.).  Sophomore Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) and senior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) earned the assists on Lynes fifth goal of the season.

Withers' first goal of the season came at 13:05 of the third period when he tipped a shot from senior Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.) by sophomore Bryan McGrath (Franklin, Mass.).  McGrath took over from Sproxton in the UNE goal at the start of the second period.  Senior Tristan Dundas (Chilliwack, B.C.) picked up the second assist.

In between, the Nor'easters erupted for seven goals.  Mecrones' first goal tied the game at 14:04 of the first period.  Bloom's first goal came with two seconds remaining in the first while UNE was on a 5-on-3 power play.

The Huskies opened the second period by killing off another Nor'easters' 5-on-3 power play, but shortly thereafter the home squad would tally four goals in a span of 3:04 to blow the game open.  Sophomore Austin Morgan (Novi, Mich.) scored what proved to be the game winner at 2:31.  Rookie Chad Merrell (Boca Raton, Fla.), Bloom and Mecrones scored goals within 44 seconds (4:51, 5:16 and 5:35) to run the lead up to 6-1.

Sophomore Justin Dixson (Sunnyvale, Calif.) added a short-handed goal at 9:04 to increase the UNE lead to 7-1.

McGrath earned his first win of the season stopping five shots over the final two periods.  Sproxton made eight saves in the first period.  Junior Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) took the loss after surrendering five goals and making 15 saves in 25:16 of action.  Senior Paul Léger (Blainville, Quebec) came on the stop 15 shots over the final 34:44.  UNE outshot USM 37-15 in the game, including 26-6 over the last 40 minutes.

Southern Maine is back in action next Friday (7 p.m.) when it hosts Skidmore College at the USM Ice Arena.  UNE hosts Curry College next Friday (7 p.m.).
