BEAN'S BEARINGS: Wrapping Up the 30th Annual Husky Golf Classic

BEAN'S BEARINGS: Wrapping Up the 30th Annual Husky Golf Classic

Bean's Bearings - August 24, 2018

Another successful Husky Golf Classic is in the books!

On Monday, August 13, 168 golfers took part in the 30th annual Husky Golf Classic at beautiful Falmouth Country Club.  In spite of soggy predictions, the rain held off and the day was clear for this important annual event that continues to build interest, numbers and support.  Participants in this year's Husky Golf Classic received 18 holes of golf, a cart, continental breakfast, a barbecue at the turn and a fantastic buffet dinner at the awards ceremony.  Held annually, the proceeds from the tournament support the USM golf team, the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Awards program, and Honors Night - a celebratory evening to honor departing senior student-athletes.

As always our sponsors play a significant role in delivering an oustanding experience for our golfers. PepsiCo served as the presenting sponsor for the 2018 Husky Golf Classic.  Sodexo was the dinner sponsor and Custom Coach and Limousine was the lunch sponsor and co-sponsor of the golf carts with Harriman Associates. Embrace Home Loans served as the sponsor for awards and participant gifts, while Musco Lighting was this year's golf ball sponsor.  Yankee Ford sponsored the hole-in-one for a 2018 Ford Focus, and Southwest Greens sponsored a hole-in-one for $10,000, sadly no winner.  Cross Insurance served as the breakfast sponsor and Gorham House of Pizza sponsored the putting contest.  Needless to say, we were very pleased with the generosity of our major sponsors of the events.

In addition, 32 businesses sponsored tees or greens at the various holes and USM gave away just over $4,200 in prizes donated by 35 area businesses.  Team and individual prizes were awarded to first, second and third place finishes, gross and net.  Competitions for closest to the pin and longest drive were also awarded and someone walked away with a nice 50/50 share.

Overall, it was a great day of golf, fun, food and camaraderie led by USM President Glenn Cummings and Vice President Nancy Griffin who led their teams.  Thanks to everyone who participated in anyway in this tournament, it really makes a difference for our student-athletes; we will start plans for next year's event very soon.  Special thanks to Husky Hall of Fame member Dick Harris '57 and Falmouth Club for making it a great day.
