BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Molly Carl (York, Maine) and sophomore Morgan Beede (Augusta, Maine/Cony) finished one-two Saturday to lead the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team to a second-place finish among 11 teams competing in the University of New England Invitational at Rotary Park.
Carl covered the 5,110-meter course in 20 minutes, 28 seconds to win the race. Beede came across the finish line in 20:53.
Freshman Hannah Wiley (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) was the third USM runner to finish coming home in 10th place with her time 21:55. Juniors Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) and Ariel Howes (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) completed the Huskies' five scoring runners placing 15th and 16th respectively.
The host University of New England Nor'easters took the team title by placing their five scoring runners among the top nine finishers. The Nor'easters totaled 33 points to edge the Huskies who scored 44. Husson University (76), the University of Maine Farmington (131) and Saint Joseph's College (147) round out the top five teams.
The Huskies return to action next weekend (September 17) when they compete at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.
