PORTLAND, Maine -- Junior Molly Carl (York, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's cross country team opened the 2011 season with a strong performance in a non-scoring event against Brandeis University Friday afternoon.
Carl had the field covered by more than a minute completing the 4,000-meter course around Back Cove in 14 minutes, 39 seconds. Freshman Miriam Stulin (Wellesley, Mass./Dana Hall School) of Brandeis was second with her time of 15:42, and senior teammate Kate Warwick (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) was third in 15:52.
The Huskies also received strong opening day performances from sophomore Morgan Beede (Augusta, Maine/Cony) who crossed the line fourth in 16:01, junior Brooke Madden (Dedham, Maine/Brewer) in fifth with her time of 16:53,and junior Ariel Howes (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) right on Madden's shoulder in sixth, also in 16:53.
Southern Maine returns to action on September 10 when it travels to Biddeford, Maine, to defend its title at the University of New England Invitational.
