SALEM, Mass. -- Junior setter Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) recorded a game-high 23 assists and added three aces as the University of Southern Maine swept Salem State University 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-21) in a non-conference women's volleyball match Thursday evening at Twohig Gymnasium.
The Huskies, who have won eight of their past nine matches, improved to 13-5 on the season. The Vikings dropped their third straight match and dipped to 8-9.
The Huskies broke open the first set after Salem State drew to within 8-6. Southern Maine went on an 11-3 spurt, highlighted by sophomore Faolain Harrington's (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) two kills and a block during the run. With a 19-9 lead, the Huskies closed out the set with kills by sophomore Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and senior Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) and an ace by Schmitz.
Southern Maine opened a large lead in set two as the team hit at a .250 (12-4-32) clip. Leading 13-6, the Huskies went up 19-7 as senior Mo Raymond (Sanbornton, N.H./Winnisquam) had back-to-back kills and Williamson added successive aces. The Vikings fought back with five straight points off the serve of sophomore Chloe Roy (West Springfield, Mass.), who had two aces and a kill. However, Southern Maine recovered and went on to win 25-15.
The third set went back and forth as the teams traded points early. Trailing 7-3, Salem State pulled ahead on aces by sophomore Sara Corey (Whately, Mass.) and a kill by junior Jasmine Severino (Lawrence, Mass.). A kill by Severino put the Vikings up 18-16 before the Huskies rallied behind two kills from sophomore Megan Gettings (Bristol, Conn.). A kill by junior Maddi O'Connor (Hamilton, Mass.) pulled the Vikings to within three at 23-20, but Harrington finished the set with her seventh kill of the night as the Huskies won 25-21.
Rookie Lauren Delissio (Hebron, Conn.) had 13 digs in the win while Harrington added three blocks. Junior Mackenzie Salls (Turners Falls, Mass.) led Salem State with 19 assist and senior Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) had a match-high 15 digs. O'Connor had six kills for the Vikings.
