Southern Maine Sweeps St. Joseph's (CT) and Emmanuel
BOSTON -- Senior outside hitter Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) had 39 kills and 21 digs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to victories over the University of St. Joseph's (Conn.) Bluejays and Emmanuel College Saints in a pair of non-conference volleyball matches played Saturday afternoon at Emmanuel's Yosinoff Court.
The Huskies downed USJ in their opening match 3-1 (25-16, 25-9, 18-25, 25-11), then returned to the floor to defeat Emmanuel 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-13). The two wins improved the Huskies' overall record to 5-1. Emmanuel beat USJ in the opening match of the day to earn in a split and is now 2-5. St. Joseph's fell to 1-4 with the two losses.
Williamson had two more double-doubles knocking down 17 kills and digging up 17 balls in the win over St. Joseph's. The 5-foot-8 outside hitter came back to add 22 kills and 10 digs against Emmanuel.
Against USJ, the Huskies dominated to take the first two sets before dropping the third. USM rebounded to snuff out any possible comeback bid with a big fourth-set win. Rookie right side Jamie Jannarone (Windham, Maine) complement Williamson with eight kills without an error, and sophomores Faolain Harrington (Auburn, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and Kylee Austin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) chipped in five kills apiece. Junior Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) dished out 33 assists, and senior Mariah Garcia (Brighton, Colo./Central) had a team-high 10 digs.
Sophomore Jasmine Buckley (Beacon, N.Y.) and junior Carly Ruzbasen (Torrington, Conn.) led the Bluejays with seven and six kill respectively. Junior Brenna Miller (McCleary, Wash.) had 11 assists and rookie Janell Molina (Honolulu, Hawaii) passed out nine more. Ruzbasen matched Williamson with 17 digs for game-high honors.
After a closely fought first set against Emmanuel, the Huskies dominated the final two sets for the straight-sets win. Williamson had 22 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Schmitz contributed another 30 assists, and Garcia had 18 digs.
Junior Mary Shelow (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Marissa Cataldo (Melrose, Mass.) led the Saints with eight kills apiece. Junior setter Carly Church (Higganum, Conn.) had 18 assists, and junior Katharine Journeay (Hampton, N.H.) and junior Michelle Church (Higganum, Conn.) had 20 and 16 digs respectively.
The Huskies will travel to Lewiston, Maine, to take on Bates College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.). Emmanuel will head north to play at Plymouth State University, also on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.). St. Joseph's visits Elms College on Thursday (7:00 p.m.).
