Close 13th After Day One in the Heptathlon
La CROSSE, Wis. -- The first day of competition in the women's heptathlon is complete at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships being held at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Competing in her first NCAA championships, University of Southern Maine sophomore Emily Close (Orleans, Vt./Lake Region Union) is in 13th place after the first four events that make up the seven-event women's heptathlon. Close has a total of 2,593 points after four events.
Close opened the event with a time of 16.10 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles (702 points), then came back to cleared 1.54 meters (5-0 ½) in the high jump (666). In the shot put (462), Close had a best throw of 8.96 meters (29-4 ¾). In the final event of the first day, the 200 meters (763), Close was third among the competitors with a time of 26.39 seconds.
The final three events in the heptathlon - long jump, javelin, 800 meters - will be contested Friday.
