Kalilwa Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Monday afternoon that University of Southern Maine freshman Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) has been selected as the women's outdoor track and field Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season in recognition of her performance at this past weekend's New England Alliance/Little East Conference/MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Westfield (Mass.) State University.

Kalilwa helped the Huskies sweep the Alliance and LEC titles with her efforts in the long jump and triple jump, as well as the 100 and 200-meter dashes.  Kalilwa was runner-up in the long jump with a personal best mark of 5.52 meters (18-1 ½) and second by one centimeter in the triple jump with a mark of 11.75 meters (38-6 ¾).

On the track, Kalilwa placed fourth in the 100 dash final with her career-best time of 12.41 seconds, and was sixth in the 200 crossing the line with another career-best time of 25.83 seconds.  Kalilwa also anchored the Huskies' 4 x 100-meter relay combination that finished second with a season-best time of 47.57 seconds.  The relay's time ranks 13th on the latest Division III performance list.

Southern Maine won its 18th consecutive Little East Conference title scoring 188 total points.  Rhode Island College was runner-up with 113 points, and the University of Massachusetts Boston edged in-state foe University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 78-74, for the third spot.

In the 12-team Alliance scoring which combines all competing schools from the LEC and the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, Southern Maine won its fourth straight title, and 16th in the last 18 years, with 166.75 points.  Host Westfield State University was second with 126.60 points, followed by Bridgewater State University with 92.95, Rhode Island College with 84.60, and UMass Boston with 77.60.

Qualified members of the Southern Maine team will travel to Williamstown, Mass., this Friday and Saturday for the annual New England Division III Outdoor Championships being held at Williams College.
