Canastra, Michaud Earn Weekly Honors from Little East Conference

GORHAM, Maine  – Juniors Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Sarah Michaud (Candia, N.H./Manchester Central) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team have each earned weekly citations from the Little East Conference following an outstanding 2-0 week for the Huskies, including a 2-0 win over LEC opponent UMass Dartmouth.

Named the LEC Goalkeeper of the Week, Canastra posted an outstanding 0.50 goals against average backstopping the Huskies to a pair of wins during the week, making 13 saves over the course of 180 minutes of action.  In a 3-1 victory against Fitchburg State, Canastra made five saves.  Against LEC opponent UMass Dartmouth, Canastra kept the sheet clean making eight saves and several key defensive plays en route to the 2-0 win.  Canastra made three second half saves, including a diving stop and a breakaway attempt to keep the Corsairs off the board late to earn her second shut out victory of the season and the fourth of her career.

Named the LEC Defensive Player of the Week, Michaud is earned conference weekly honors for the first time in her career after scoring a pair of goals during the Huskies' 2-0 week.  Michaud scored Southern Maine's game-winning goal in its 3-1 win over Fitchburg State.  With both of Michaud's goals coming from distance, her goal against Fitchburg State was a 30-yard strike that sailed through the outstretched hands of the FSU goalie, earning Michaud her first game-winning goal of the season and third of her career.   Michaud scored USM's second goal in its 2-0 win over the Corsairs, beating the UMD goalkeeper and the clock as her shot hit the back of the nets as time expired in the first half.  Another long-range attempt, Michaud received the ball outside of the box and this time put the ball on frame to the far-right upper ninety of the nets.

Winners of two consecutive games, Southern Maine returns to action at home against Pine Manor College on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) against non-conference opponent Pine Manor College.
