GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Angelina Estrada (Springfield, Mass.) and Mackenzie LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) each scored within the opening 16 minutes of the game to lead the Elms College Blazers to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Elms improves to 1-1 on the season. Southern Maine, which won its season opener, evens out its record at 1-1.
Estrada converted an assist from LaRochelle in the ninth minute to give the Blazers and early lead over the Huskies. LaRochelle collected a loose ball over the top of the Huskies' midfield and then took a pair of touches, beating an onrushing Southern Maine junior goalkeeper Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) to the inside for a 2-0 lead.
Canastra faced consistent pressure from the Blazers in both halves, making 11 saves in the game. Elms tallied 18 shots (13 on net) for an 18-5 advantage, and had 12 corners kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Molin (West Hartford, Conn.) made three saves, all in the second half to earn the shut out.
