Western Connecticut Rolls Past Southern Maine 19-7

Western Connecticut Rolls Past Southern Maine 19-7

            DANBURY, Conn. -- Senior Destinee Carey (New Milford, Conn.) scored a game-high five goals to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a convincing 19-7 victory over visiting University of Southern Maine at The Westside Athletic Complex on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.

            Junior Olivia Kosilla (Ellington, Conn.) finished with nine total points as she scored four goals and assisted on five others.  Freshmen sensation Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, Conn.) added four markers and a pair of helpers for the winners.

            Senior netminder Missy O'Donnell (Bridgeport, Conn.) made 10 saves, many of them a point-blank range, for WestConn.

            Senior Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine), sophomore Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) each scored two goals for the Huskies.  Sophomore goalies Hala Van Nostrand (Granby, Conn.) and Miriam Wood (Wakefield, Mass.) combined to make four saves.

            Western Connecticut, now 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the league, earned the number four seed and will host fifth seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Quarterfinal Round game in the upcoming LEC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 2.  Game time will be decided on Sunday.  The Corsairs fell to Keene State, 9-8 in overtime, on Saturday.

            Southern Maine fell to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in Little East Conference action.  The Huskies secured the sixth seed in the playoffs and will travel to Keene State College on Tuesday.

            The Colonials raced out to a 10-1 lead midway through the first half when Kosilla scored her 41st goal of the season off a feed from Nicole Evangelista (Franklin Square, N.Y.).

            The Huskies drew within eight goals following Jordan's 34th goal of the season with 6:50 left before intermission.

            Baldelli's 46th goal of the season put the hosts up 12-2 with 6:16 remaining before the break.

            Leading 14-3 to open the second stanza, WestConn took its foot off the gas pedal and coasted to victory.

            Eastern Connecticut defeated Plymouth State, 9-8, on Saturday to capture the regular-season LEC slate at 6-0.  Eastern earned the top seed while Plymouth State finished in second.  Both teams earned a bye in the LEC's first round.
