Southern Maine Sixth Seed for NEHC Playoff

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team will be the sixth seed for the 2018 New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) playoffs that begin Saturday (February 17) with four quarterfinal games.  The NEHC office announced the pairings for the eight-team, single-elimination tournament this afternoon.

The Huskies, 8-16-1 overall and 4-9-1 in conference play during the regular season, will face third-seeded Castleton University.  The Spartans closed the regular season at 12-12-1 overall and 8-5-1 in NEHC games.

During the regular season, the teams met twice with the Spartans coming away with two victories.  Castleton came from behind to defeat USM, 4-1, on November 18, and shut out USM, 4-0, in the final game of the regular season this past Saturday.

The two teams have met twice before in the playoffs, most recently in 2015, with the Spartans taking a pair of one-goal victories on home ice.

The other three quarterfinal-round games pit eighth-seeded New England College (2-21-2; 1-12-1) at top-seeded and defending champion Norwich University (21-1-3; 14-0-0).  Second-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston (10-11-4; 9-3-2) will host seventh seeded Salve Regina University (4-20-1; 3-11-0), and fourth-seeded Plymouth State University (8-13-4; 7-5-2) will entertain fifth-seeded University of New England (9-9-7; 4-5-5).

The winners of the four quarterfinal games will move on to the semifinals on February 24 with the lowest remaining seed traveling to the highest remaining seed.  The championship game will be held on March 3.  All games will be played at the higher seed.

The winner of the NEHC championship tournament will receive an automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
