Castleton Blanks Southern Maine 4-0
GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Castleton University Spartans women's ice hockey team shut out the University of Southern Maine Huskies 4-0 in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's action Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the USM Ice Arena. The game was the final contest of the regular season for both teams.
The Spartans concluded the regular season at .500 with the win, and swept the teams home-and-home season series. The Spartans head into the NEHC playoffs 12-12-1 overall, and 8-5-1 in league play. The Huskies dropped their second straight game to finish the regular season 8-16-1 overall and 4-9-1 in conference play.
Based upon the final standings, the two teams will meet again next weekend at Castleton in a first-round playoff game. The official announcement of the pairings for the NEHC playoffs will be made Sunday at noon.
Four different players notched goals for the Spartans, and rookie defenseman Courtney Gauthier (Tampa, Fla.) picked up three assists. Sophomore goalie Alexis Kalm (Aberdeen, N.C.) stopped 11 shots to earn her fifth shutout of the season.
Southern Maine junior goaltender Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) had 38 saves.
Castleton scored the only marker of the first period when senior Lisa Kilroy (Leominster, Mass.) wristed a shot from the high slot area through a screen and into the top right corner of the net for her 10th goal of the season.
Starting the second period on a power-play that carried over from the opening period, junior Jade Remillard (Fairfield, Vt.) made the Huskies pay redirecting a shot from junior Chanel Tvergyak (Vernon, B.C.) past Evangelista at 1:34. Less than six minutes later, rookie Ali Stevens (Jefferson, Mass.) made it 3-0 when she scored from in close for another power-play goal. Sophomore Maeghan Vasile (Milford, Mass.) finished off the scoring at 16:33 potting the rebound of a shot from junior Aimee Briand (Barrington, N.H.).
The teams skated through a scoreless third period with the Spartans rolling up a 15-4 edge in shots on goal.
Castleton piled up a 42-11 advantage in shots on goal and went 2 for 4 on the power play. Southern Maine was 0 for 3 with the extra skater.
Prior to the start of the game, the Huskies honored their lone senior, winger Emilee Burris (Brookfield, N.S.). The game marked the 100th appearance in a USM jersey for Burris, making her the 20th player in the history of the program to reach the century mark.
