MINNEOLA, Fla. – Despite a pair of strong starting pitching performances from sophomore Rebecca Ackerson (Whitefield, Maine/Hall Dale) and senior Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble), the University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team dropped a pair of games in the second day of its spring break trip. USM fell to 3-0 to Stevenson, and then 4-3 to Olivet.
With the pair of losses Southern Maine is now 1-3 on the season. Olivet is now 7-3 with the win over Southern Maine, while Stevenson improves to 3-5.
GAME ONE: STEVENSON 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0
Stevenson's Tiffany McKee his a bases clearing double to left center field in the bottom of the third and Morghan Fulton held USM to just four hits over seven innings to lead Stevenson to a 3-0 win over the Huskies.
Fulton went seven full allowing just four singles and three walks while striking out five to pick up the shutout. McKee's double came with two outs in the inning driving in Alexandra DiGrande, Danielle Ebbighausen and Kayla Briles, who reached on a walk and back-to-back singles.
Ackerson took the loss giving up four hits and a walk over six innings, while walking one. Junior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) collected a pair of singles for the Huskies.
GAME TWO: OLIVET 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 3
Olivet scored two runs in the top of the first and the top of the fifth and held off the Huskies in the late innings of the game to earn the 4-3 win. Ahead 2-0 through four innings, Olivet's Kinslea Blouin hit a two-run home run to right center field to double the lead as Olivet collected ten hits off of Southern Maine.
USM rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the inning when freshmen Hannah Kenney (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) and Katie Favaloro (Rockport, Mass.) touched home plate after a throwing error from the Olivet shortstop on a grounder from sophomore Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine). Kenney reached safely with a single to left, while Favaloro reached on a fielder's choice.
The score remained 4-2 after six and a half innings. In their final at bat, the Huskies trimmed its deficit to one run on a two-out single to left field from senior Taylor Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy), but were unable to score an equalizer.
Olivet's Gracie Boyle held USM to three unearned runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out four. Kelly took the loss for USM, allowing four runs (two earned) in five innings. Kelly gave up seven hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three. Senior Haeli Campbell (Manchester, N.H./Goffstown) closed the game for USM, pitching two innings. Campbell gave up three hits.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday against Northwestern (Minn.) (5:30) and Trinity (Conn.) (7:30).
