Southern Maine Sweeps Owls 12-4 (5) and 6-1

GORHAM, Maine   –  Junior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine) fired a one-hit gem in the second game of doubleheader to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls in a non-conference softball tilt Sunday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine.  Southern Maine defeated the Owls 12-4 in five innings in the opener and then took the second game 6-1 behind Stockwell's strong performance.

         With the pair of wins Southern Maine snaps a six-game losing streak and improves to 3-23 on the season.  The Owls fall to 6-19 with the two losses. 

         Stockwell went a complete seven innings allowing just one hit while fanning six batters.  She had two walks and did not give up an earned run.  With Stockwell controlling the UMPI bats, the lone Owl runner to advance past second base reached due to an error and eventually plated an unearned run.

         The Huskies connected on nine hits with six different batters earning an RBI.  After a scoreless two and a half innings, Southern Maine plated three runs in the bottom of the third.  Sophomore Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) drove in the Huskies first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field while freshman Kristen Duross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) continued her hot-hitting knocking in a run with a base hit up the middle.  Senior Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, Maine) capped the scoring for the Huskies with an RBI triple to plate Duross.

         The Owls scored their lone run of the game on an RBI ground out from freshman Danielle Smith (Phillips, Maine) to cut the USM advantage to 3-1 in the top of the fourth, but the Huskies' answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to retain a 4-1 lead.  Stockwell earned the RBI in the fourth with a double.  The  Huskies then added a single run in the fifth and the sixth innings for the 6-1 final.  Senior Kaylie DeMillo drove in the run in the fifth with a single down the left field line, while senior Katie Davis' (Woburn, Mass.) single to right field plate the run in the sixth.

         In the opener, Southern Maine jumped on top of the Owls with eight runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to the 12-4 win in five innings.  Senior Alexandra Perdomo (Portland, Maine) earned her first win of the season firing three innings for the Huskies.  Perdomo allowed no one on just one hit and two walks and had one strikeout.

         Davis was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI for the Huskies, while Stockwell was a 3-for-4 with one RBI.  Stockwell connected on two of her singles in the bottom of the first as the Huskies collected six of their 13 hits in the inning.  Four of the Huskies' six hits in the inning were for extra bases, including doubles from Davis, Duross, sophomore Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) and DeMillo.

         Freshman Courtney Bishop (Saco, Maine) took the loss for UMPI.  She allowed eight earned runs on 13 hits and a walk.  She had two strikeouts.  Freshman Danielle Smith (Phillips, Maine) collected two of the Owls' five hits.

         Southern Maine travels to Bates College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).    UMaine Presque Isle travels to Vermont Tech on Friday (3:30 p.m.).
