Chipman, Storey Win Titles at State Championships

 

            LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomores Parker Chipman (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) and Ryan Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) each had first-place finishes to lead the University of Southern Maine at the 2011 Maine State Intercollegiate Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted Saturday by Bates College at the Russell Street Track.

            The Huskies finished fourth in the four-team event scoring 76 points.  Bates College won the team title scoring 251 points, followed by Bowdoin College in second place with 175 points.  Colby College took third with 108 points.

            Chipman took first place in the 400-meter dash clocking a time of 50.37 seconds.  Storey won the high jump clearing 1.88 meters (6 feet, 2 inches).

            Senior John Davis (Westbrook, Maine) earned an ECAC qualifying mark competing in the pole vault.  Davis finished second in the event clearing 4.55 meters (14-11).  Senior Matt Harmon (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) finished third in the hammer throw.  Harmon, who has previously qualified for the ECAC championship, again met the championship's qualifying standard in the event with a throw of 47.68 meters (156-5).

            Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships hosted by Fitchburg State University.
