Helderman (PV), Marshall (60) and Ramadan (400) Take Top Spots
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's track team won three individual titles en route to a fourth-place finish at the annual State of Maine Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday evening at the Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin College.
The Huskies finished with 82 points to place fourth among the five teams competing. Bates College took the team title for the fourth time in the last five years with 185 points. Host Bowdoin was runner-up with 176 points, and Colby College was third with 105.
Junior Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine) won his second straight state title in the pole vault by clearing 4.55 meters (14-11). Sophomore Jared Marshall (Gloucester, Mass.) took the title in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.04 seconds, and sophomore Hany Ramadan (Portland, Maine/Deering) took the 400-meter title with a time of 49.74.
Marshall also took runner-up spot in the 200 meters after crossing the finish line in 22.58 seconds.
Senior Connor Harris (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) posted two top three finishes finishing runner-up in the high jump after clearing 1.88 meters (6-2) and third in the triple jump with a mark of 13.60 meters (44-7 ½).
The Huskies' 4 x 400-meter relay combination of freshman Paolo DeMarco (Portland, Maine/Deering), junior Justin Pierce (Standish, Maine/Mt. Ararat), Marshall and Ramadan turned in a second-place performance with a combined time of 3:25.12.
Senior Roger Charest (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) was third in the 600 meters with a time of 1:23.84, and rookie Nick Harriman (Lisbon, Maine) was third in the 3,000 meters turning in a time of 8:48.21. Pierce contributed a fourth-place finish in the high jump clearing 1.83 meters (6-0).
The Huskies will host the annual New England Alliance/Little East Conference Championships next Saturday (11:00 a.m.) at the Costello Sports Complex.
