Huskies Third at State Championships Meet

            BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Senior George Foster (Lewiston, Maine) won the 600-meter run and ran a leg of the Huskies' first place 4 x 800-meter relay team to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a third-place finish at the 2011 Maine State Intercollegiate Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Bowdoin College Saturday night.

            Bates College won the team title tallying 194 points, and Bowdoin was second with 143.  Southern Maine was third with 122 points.  Colby College finished fourth with 91.

            Foster claimed the top spot in the 600 with his winning time of 1 minute, 22.68 seconds.  Foster also ran the first leg of the Huskies winning 4 x 800-meter relay team.  Foster combined with sophomore Seth Neuts (Portland, Maine/Dearing), freshman Julian Gazzelloni (Windham, Maine) and junior Ben Manning (Jericho, Vt./Mt. Mansfield Union) to cross the finish line in 8:04.74.

            Southern Maine's 4 x 400 relay team also claimed the top spot.  Senior Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering), junior Jacob Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region), sophomore Codey Rich (Wells, Maine) and senior Corey Gobbi (Bradford, Mass./Haverhill) raced for a winning time of 3:29.31.

            Gobbi and Gazzelloni also earned second-place finishes for USM.  Gobbi placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 51.33 seconds, and Gazzelloni and Neuts finished second and third in the 1,000 with a times of 2:32.39 and 2:32.66.

            In the field events, sophomore Ryan Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) earned a first place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1 1/4 inches).  Senior Matt Harmon (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) set a new school record in the weight throw for the third time this season with a throw of 15.05 meters (49-4 1/2) to finish fourth.

            Southern Maine competes at the Boston University Valentine's Classic on Friday (4:00 p.m.).
