GORHAM, Maine – Senior Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) battled to a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 win at second singles to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 7-2 win over the Rhode Island College Anchormen in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.
Earning its fourth straight win, Southern Maine improves to 10-4 and 3-3 in the Little East Conference. Rhode Island College falls to 1-14 and 0-6 in the conference. The Huskies will be the fourth-seed in the upcoming Little East Conference tournament and will host a match on Tuesday (tba) against an opponent to be determined.
Leading 2-1 after the doubles points, the Huskies were able to win five out of six singles points. Caron's key victory over freshman Anthony DeFrancesco (Branford, Conn.) helped off set RIC sophomore Alex Werchadlo's (Woonsocket, R.I./Cumberland) win over USM junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth) 7-6, 6-2.
USM freshmen Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) and Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) continued their strong play for the Huskies picking up wins at third and fourth singles respectively. Gagne defeated RIC freshman Sean Raudonaitis (Westport, Mass.) 6-0, 6-1, while St. John downed senior Jason Morin (East Providence, R.I.) 6-0, 6-2.
Southern Maine travels to Bates College (4:00 p.m.). The loss concludes the Anchormen's season.
