Southern Maine Rallies To Defeat Salem State 5-4

GORHAM, Maine – Trailing 2-1 after the doubles points played out, the University of Southern Maine Huskies won four out of six singles matches to earn a 5-4 win over the Salem State University Vikings in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Mass.

         With its third straight win, Southern Maine improves its record to 9-4 on the season and 2-3 in the Little East Conference.  Salem State falls to 6-9 and 2-4 in the LEC.

         Sophomore Corey Dyke (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy) sealed the victory for the Huskies with a hard-fought 7-6, 6-4 win at sixth singles .  Dyke defeated Salem State senior Jon Joe Kim (Seoul, South Korea/North Andover) to put the Huskies ahead 5-3.

         Junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth), freshman Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) and sophomore Zac Cary (Buxton, Maine) also picked up key wins for the Huskies in singles action.

         Whitman defeated Salem State senior Rob Random (Newbury, Mass./Triton Regional) 7-5, 7-6 at the top of the line-up, while Gagne downed sophomore Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass./Another Course to College) 6-1, 1-0 (ret) at third singles.  Cary earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at fifth singles over junior Ken Hodgkins (Winthrop, Mass.).

         Southern Maine hosts Rhode Island College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in its final regular season Little East Conference match.
