Kean Overcomes Southern Maine 2-1 in OT

LONG ISLAND, N.Y.  – Freshman Russell Hoffer (West Orange, N.J.) scored in the 92nd minute to deliver a 2-1 overtime victory for the Kean University Cougars over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the second game of the St. Joseph's (Long Island) Invitational Tournament Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.

Trailing the Huskies after the 25th minute, the Cougars used late game heroics to earn their first win of the season to improve to 1-1.  Suffering its first loss, Southern Maine is now 2-1.

The Huskies led 1-0 after the 25th minute on freshman Joseph Kalilwa's (Lewiston, Maine) first goal of his intercollegiate career on an assist from sophomore Sam Anderson (Middletown, Conn./Bristol Central).  Kalilwa's goal was one of two USM shots registered in the first half, as Kean held a 10-2 advantage in shots for the first 45 minutes.  Anderson found Kalilwa for the goal with a through ball down the left side, marking his first assist of the season.

Despite outshooting USM 22-3 for the game, the Cougars remained behind the Huskies' goal until the closing minutes of action.  With the clock winding down, junior Erick Reyes' (Summit, N.J.) scored in the 87th minute after running onto a searching ball from freshman Christian Pozzoli (West Orange, N.J.) for the equalizer.

Forcing the overtime action, Kean wasted little time scoring the golden goal as Hoffer scored just 1:09 into the extra period after a free kick. Hoffer cleared up a loose ball sent in from sophomore Jake Santos (Kenilworth, N.J./David Brearly) for the game-winner.

Freshman goalkeeper Manuel Steven Ortiz Ruiz (Roselle, N.J./Linden) earned the win.  He did not make a save in 91:55 of action.  Southern Maine rookie goalkeeper Richard Glemawu (Accra, Ghana/Kent (Conn.)) turned in another strong performance making six saves in the loss.

Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (12:00 p.m.) in the second game of the tourney, and will face William Patterson.
