Southern Maine Wins at Salem State 13-6
SALEM, MASS. – Senior Nick DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and junior Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) notched three goals apiece as the University of Southern Maine used a six-goal first quarter to earn a 13-6 victory over Salem State University in a Little East Conference game at Alumni Field on Wednesday evening.
The Huskies evened their record at 6-6 overall with their third straight win, and fifth in the last six games, and improved to 3-1 in conference. The Vikings dropped their third straight to slip to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in the Little East.
Seniors Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) and Sam Fortin (Brunswick, Maine) and sophomore Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, BC) each had two goals for the Huskies. Sophomore Bryce Randall (Portland, Maine/Deering) had the other Southern Maine goal.
Senior Charlie Bourgeois (Billerica, Mass.) led the Vikings scoring three goals. Junior Zach Persson (Danvers, Mass.) had two goals and sophomore Hunter Spencer (Beverly, Mass.) tallied one for Salem State.
Bourgeois put Salem State on the board first as he rifled in a shot from rookie Jay Colletti (Billerica, Mass.) in the opening minute. DelGiudice answered with consecutive goals for Southern Maine and Dundas added a third for the Huskies less than 2:30 into the game. Bourgeois added his second of the game before Randall made it 4-2 in favor of Southern Maine at the 8:45 mark. Spencer and back-to-back scores from Wing made the score 6-3 after one period of play.
Bourgeois netted a hat-trick early in the second quarter, pulling Salem State to within two (6-4). However, Fortin and Leonardo answered for the Huskies in the final four minutes, allowing Southern Maine to enter halftime with an 8-4 lead.
Persson made the score 8-5, 8:26 into the third. Fortin pushed the lead back to four with his second of the game with 3:23 remaining in the third.
The Huskies put the game away with four goals in the fourth. DelGiudice's third goal pushed the lead to 10-5 before Persson got one back for the Vikings. Dundas then tallied his second before Leonardo closed the scoring with a pair of goals to make the final 13-6.
Senior Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) made 16 saves in the win while junior Chris Schaub (Brewster, N.Y.) had 12 stops for the Vikings.
Southern Maine will host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a Little East Conference match on Saturday (3 p.m.). Salem State travels to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (3 p.m.) for an LEC game.
