UNE Rolls Past Southern Maine 15-3
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England men's lacrosse team ran off 13 unanswered goals en route to posting a 15-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.
The win was the third in four starts for the Nor'easters and was their ninth straight over the Huskies. The Huskies, playing their first game in nine days due to weather-related postponements, slipped to 1-1 on the season.
After UNE took a 2-0 lead in the early stages of the first quarter, Southern Maine came back to tie the game on an unassisted goal from junior Paul Leonardo (Groton, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) at 4:18, and a goal from senior Nate DelGiudice (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) with 13 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The tie lasted only 10 seconds as the Nor'easters won the ensuing faceoff that resulted in an unassisted marker from senior Andrew Markham (Peabody, Mass./St. Mary's) to make it 3-2 at the end of the quarter.
UNE outscored USM 6-0 in the second quarter as junior Mitch Mullen (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) and sophomore Garrett Bozek (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) scored two goals apiece. Junior Alex Zadworny (Florence, Mass./Northampton) passed out three assists in the quarter.
The Nor'easters continued to increase their lead throughout the third and fourth quarters to a high-water mark of 15-2 on a Mullin goal with 9:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Senior Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) finally broke the run of UNE goals in the final minute of play.
Zadworny led all scorers with seven points on two goals and five assists. Mullin finished with four goals and one assist while Bozek contributed two goals and three assists. Sophomore Zach Bossi (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and junior Alec Beveridge (Arrowsic, Maine/Morse) also had two goals.
Senior Tyler Nevers (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) earned the win in the cage for the Nor'easters allowing two goals and making eight saves over the first 54:41. Sophomore Sam MacKenzie (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) came on to play the final 5:19 making one save.
Wing and DelGiudice had a goal and an assist for USM. Senior goalie Zach Bessette (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook) recorded 11 saves.
UNE piled up a 42-33 edge in shots attempted, including a 26-12 margin in shots on goal, and won the battle of the ground balls 43-27. The Nor'easters were successful on the man-up converting 4 of 5 opportunities.
Southern Maine is scheduled to host Norwich University at Hannaford Field on Saturday (1 p.m.). UNE will take on Lasell College at Homewood Field in Baltimore, Md., on Friday (7 p.m.).
