Hornblower Named LEC Defensive Player of the Year

GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight year, University of Southern Maine junior defender Sam Hornblower (Portland, Maine/Deering) has been named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a first team all-conference selection when the conference office released its 2017 men's lacrosse postseason awards and all-conference teams Tuesday following a vote by the head coaches.

Hornblower is just the second player in the history of the UMS men's program to receive a major postseason award from the LEC, and the first to be a two-time winner.  He joins Dylan Kenney (2013) as the second Husky in the last five seasons to be selected the Defensive Player of the Year.

The 6-foot-4 Hornblower, who regularly draws the top defensive assignment, played in all 16 games this season scoring eight goals and handing out four assists.  He also scooped up 56 ground balls and caused a team-high 31 opponent turnovers.  He had a season-high three points on three goals in the Huskies' 13-5 win over Becker College on March 22, and had a career-high for ground balls with seven against Salem State University on April 19.

"Sam is definitely one of the most intelligent players I've coached.  He has an incredible game IQ," commented sixth-year head coach Sam Lane.  "And his size (6-4, 220) does hurt either.  He moves very well for a big man."

Southern Maine finished the season with a 6-10 record overall and a 3-4 mark in conference play to earn the fifth seed in the championship tournament.
