GORHAM, Maine -- The geographic extremes of the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) will meet when the seventh-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies travel to second-seeded Hobart College (Geneva, N.Y.) for the opening round of the eight-team, single-elimination championship tournament.  The NEHC office announced the first-round pairings this afternoon for the tournament that begins with four quarterfinal-round games on Saturday (February 17).

The Huskies finished the regular season 3-18-4 overall and 3-12-3 in league play.  The Statesmen, ranked #11/#12 in last week's national polls, concluded their first season in the NEHC at 15-5-5 overall and 12-3-3 in the league.  The Statesmen swept the teams home-and-home series during the regular season, defeating the Huskies 8-1 at USM Ice Arena on November 3, and shutting out the Huskies 4-0 at home on January 27.

In the other first round match-ups, eighth-seeded Castleton University (7-15-3; 3-14-1) travels to in-state rival and top seed Norwich University (17-6-2; 13-3-2).  Skidmore College (6-17-2; 4-12-2), the sixth seed, will play at third-seeded Babson College (14-8-3; 12-4-2), and fifth-seeded New England College will play at fourth-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston (16-9-0; 11-7-0).

The winners of the four quarterfinal games will move on to the semifinals on February 24 with the lowest remaining seed traveling to the highest remaining seed.  The championship game will be held on March 3.  All games will be played at the higher seed.

The winner of the NEHC championship tournament will receive an automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
