HENNIKER, N.H. -- Rookie goaltender Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) stopped 33 shots to earn his first collegiate shutout as the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies blanked the New England College Pilgrims 1-0 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game Saturday night at Lee Clements Arena.
The victory snapped the Huskies' seven-game winless streak (0-5-2), and improved their record to 2-8-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the league play. The Pilgrims had their six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) snapped by the loss and slide to 7-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in NEHC games.
D'Aloisio protected the Huskies' one-goal lead provided by junior Tyler Mathieu (Stillwater Lake, N.S.) in the final minute of the first period. D'Aloisio made 15 saves in the second period as the Pilgrims outshot the Huskies 15-5 and had four power-play opportunities, including two 5-on-3 advantages. The rookie netminder kicked out seven more shots in the third period.
Mathieu scored his third goal of the season with 15 seconds remaining in the opening period when he redirected a centering pass from rookie Jonathan Bartuccio-Pereira (St. Bruno, Quebec) past NEC senior goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean City, N.J.). Senior Brett Norman (Dawson Creek, B.C.) also earned an assist on the play.
The Pilgrims finished the game with a 33-22 advantage in shots on goal, but went 0 for 7 on the power play. Shapiro made 21 saves before heading to the bench with 46 seconds remaining for the extra attacker.
Southern Maine returns home to host Norwich University next Friday (7:00 p.m.) in an NEHC game. New England College host Morrisville on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match.
