Waterman, McCue & Anderson Power USM Past Colby 92-87

GORHAM, Maine   –  Junior Grayson Waterman (Berwick, Maine/Noble) scored a career-high 27 points, and senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) and freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) added 23 points and 18 points respectively to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 92-87 win over the Colby College Mules in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday night at Fifield Court.

The win snaps a three-game slide and improves Southern Maine's record to 3-17 overall.  The loss is the fifth straight for the Mules who are now 10-10 overall.

Waterman was red-hot in the first half, scoring 17 of his 27 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including a trio of three-pointers as USM snagged a 46-40 lead at the break.  Sophomore Sam Jefferson (Newton, Mass./Phillips Academy) had 13 points to pace the Mules and classmate Sean Gilmore (San Francisco, Calif.) had 11 points.  Both Jefferson and Gilmore were 5-for-6 from the field in the first half.

USM continued its solid shooting into the second half and grabbed a 13-point lead, 70-57 with 9:54 to play on a three from sophomore Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) on a feed from McCue.  McCue scored eight of his 23 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.  A three from Anderson and a layup from senior Donne Agossou (Auburn, Maine/Lewiston) sandwiched around a layup from Gilmore pushed USM's lead to 15, 75-60, with 7:13 to play and the Huskies remained comfortably in front, leading 88-74, on a traditional three-point play from McCue with just under two minutes to play before Colby stormed back into the game from beyond-the-arc.

After McCue's layup and free throw, Colby outscored USM 11-3 over the next 90 seconds to trail 91-87.  Three different Mules connected on three-pointers in the run, including Jefferson, freshman Matt Hanna (Milford, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore Ethan Schlager (Washington, DC/Choate Rosemary Hall).  After Hanna's three made if a four-point game, McCue was fouled and he made one of two at the line for the 92-87 final.

Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) hosting UMass Dartmouth. USM will celebrate its three seniors prior to the start of the game: Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy), Cam Scott (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy), Evan McElwain (York, Maine) and Donne Agossou (Auburn, Maine/Lewiston).

The Huskies shot 50.7 percent (35-for-69) from the field for the game, and were 13-for-27 (48.1 percent) from three.  Anderson was 5-for-7 from three for his 18, adding six assists, four steals and three rebounds.  Waterman nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds in addition to his 27 points. McCue finished with 24 points, five assists and two steals.

Jefferson had 27 points for the Mules on 10-of-16 shooting, including 6-for-11 from three.  Hannad had 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Gilmore had 13 points.   Sophomore Alex Dorian (Needham, Mass.) had 12 points off of the bench.
