MANCHESTER, Maine – Senior Grayson Waterman (Berwick, Maine/Noble) led the field to vault the University of Southern Maine Huskies' golf team to its third straight first place finish with a team-win at the 2017 Maine Maritime Academy Mariner Invitational hosted at the Augusta Country Club on Thursday.
All five of the Huskies' golfers finished in the top 15 of the 37-golfer field as USM took top honors with a team score of 310 (30 over par). UMaine Farmington came in behind the Huskies with a score of 313, followed by Husson University in third place with a score of 317. Host Maine Maritime placed fourth in the eight-team field with a score of 325.
Waterman edged out his closest competitor, Joey Moir of Maine Maritime Academy, by two strokes. Waterman's three-over-par 73 equaled his season-best round and marked the first time this season that he has earned individual medalist honors. Sophomore Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine) tied for fifth with a round of 78, followed by junior Mathew Mallett (Kalamazoo, Mich./Parchment) who shot a 79 to tie for eighth. Sophomores Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine) and Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) each shot an 80 to finish tied for 14th. Mallett's 79 was a season-best round.
Southern Maine returns to action over the weekend hosting its two-day Southern Maine Fall Classic at Gorham Country Club. Nine teams will compete in the event beginning on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
