Southern Maine Falls in Overtime at Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Eryn Shea (Spencer, Mass/David Prouty) knocked in the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Salem State University Vikings to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday evening in Little East Conference field hockey action at Alumni Field.
With the win, Salem State snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Little East. The loss drops Southern Maine to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Shea's game-winning goal was her third marker of the season and helped the Vikings to a come-from-behind victory. Senior goalkeeper Jessica McKenna (Rowley, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) made 11 saves on 17 shots to seal the victory for the Vikings, including six saves in the overtime period.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game after sophomore Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) drilled home her eighth goal of the season.
The score stood at 1-0 until midway through the second half, when Salem State sophomore midfielder Courtney Lynch (North Andover, Mass.) assisted on junior forward Kaitlyn Aronian's (Chelmsford, Mass.) game-tying goal in the 51st minute.
USM freshman goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) played well in the loss making 12 saves on 20 shots.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:30 p.m.) when it travels to Keene State College. Salem State travels to Worcester State University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
