Dexter, Troiano Win LEC Major Awards

GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Tuesday afternoon that University of Southern Maine junior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and freshman Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) are two of the four major award recipients headlining this year's postseason baseball awards and all-conference team following a vote by the head coaches.

Dexter became the ninth USM player in the 22-year history of Little East Conference baseball to be named Player of the Year.  Troiano is the ninth Husky to receive the Rookie of the Year honor.

In addition to the two major awards, four USM players were selected for spots on the all-conference team.  Dexter was voted to the all-conference first team at second base and relief pitcher.  Outfielders Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) and Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) were also named to the first team.

Starting pitcher Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) was named to the all-conference second team.  This is the second straight year that Dexter has been named to the all-conference first team at two positions.  Hapworth was voted to the all-conference first team for the second straight year.  Warren and Feeney are receiving their first all-conference citation.

Dexter compiled a .387 batting average (65 for 168) with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 28 RBI at the plate.  On the mound, Dexter has appeared in 20 games, all in relief, amassing a 4-3 record with 11 saves and a 1.67 ERA.  Dexter was picked as the LEC Pitcher of the Week on April 9th, and followed a week later being named the Player of the Week.

For the second straight year, a USM player captured the Rookie of the Year honor as Troiano followed Hapworth as the LEC's top rookie.  The first-year infielder, converting from the outfield to third base, has a .258 batting average (41 for 159) with six doubles, two triples, five home runs and 18 RBI.  He was named the Rookie of the Week on March 12th.

The Huskies leading hitter, Warren, a junior, is batting .401 (67 for 167) with a team-high 14 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 31 RBI.  He also leads the team in stolen bases with 15.

Hapworth, last year's LEC Rookie of the year, is batting .344 (52 for 151) with 10 doubles, eight home runs and 25 RBI.

Feeney emerged as one of the Huskies top starting pitchers this season.  The right-hander has racked up a 6-1 record with a 3.34 ERA  Feeney has worked a staff-high 56.2 innings allowing 48 hits, 21 earned runs, and 13 walks while striking out 44.  Opponents are hitting just .226 this season against Feeney.

Southern Maine, 27-13 on the season, will head to Auburn, N.Y., this week to play in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship regional tournament.  The Huskies, the third seed in the eight-team, double-elimination event, will play sixth-seeded Amherst College in a first-round game on Thursday (4:30 p.m.).
